As a concerned parent you need to make sure the solution you select places you in the Internet-safety driver’s seat through the following critical control features:

Block access to inappropriate web sites in well defined content categories, including “Porn,” “Gambling,” “Social Networking” and “Drugs.”

Sending real-time alerts profiling your child’s complete web surfing activities.

Limit time spent online by restricting Internet usage to specific dates, times, windows and quotas.

Create user profiles for each family member based on your house rules. One quality solution for the protection of children online is PureSight PC by the established parental control software vendor PureSight technologies Ltd.

Rachael Neblett, a seventeen-year old high school student from Kentucky began receiving threatening emails through her MySpace account, in the summer of 2006. The anonymous emails were of a stalking terroristic nature.

Rachael’s parents brought the emails to the attention of the principal of her high school. As the emails included details of her movements during class and after school, it was obvious that the bully was another student at the school.

In October Rachael received an email stating “I am not going to put you in the hospital, I am going to put you in the morgue.” After receiving that email, Rachael did not want to go to school or go out with her friends.

On October 9, shortly after receiving the threatening email, Rachael took her own life.

Peyton, Rachael’s older sister writes:

“My little sister committed suicide October 9, 2006. Her name is Rachael Neblett. I am here to tell you a little about her. She was 17 when she died, and the most amazing girl you would ever meet. She was an out-going, loving, and caring person. You would never dream that she would do that to herself. ….She was not just my sister, she was my best friend. .. All I have now is a big, black hole where my heart was. Because my little sister is gone, I won’t be able to see her anymore–no more trips to the mall, no more smiles, hugs, late movie nights, nothing. It’s gone.”

Sadly, Rachel is just one of many children who have been victimized by brutal cyberbullying tactics.

It is far too easy for our children to subjected to such cruelty on a daily basis. Wether it is through email, text messages, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, or blogs, our children must be protected from the malicious use of the internet. PureSight allows you an advantage far and beyond your ability to ask your children to report to an authority the abuse that exists on the internet. You can protect your children!

I highly recommended – beyond purchasing PureSight software for you and your family – that you read this special report by The Progress Freedom Foundation.
1. Know the Internet. Learn about social networking websites, blogs, chats and forums. Get familiar with the Instant Messaging applications your children use. This is the first step for you to have a better understanding of potential online Internet risks.

2. Teach your children the ABC’s of online safety basics:

a. Do not share personal information

b. Do not send pictures to strangers

c. Do keep passwords private

3. Place the computer in a common area so that all the family can see what is being accessed. If the computer is installed in a child’s bedroom it is difficult to physically monitor what he or she is doing. In addition, establish some rules about what your children can and cannot do online and set daily time limits for online activity.

4. Find websites appropriate for children and encourage them to surf there. Virtual worlds for children are a good option.

5. Explain to your children that any information posted online can be viewed and tracked by anyone, including details and status updates on social networking websites. The same rules apply to personal information, photos and videos.

6. Safe search. Set search engines to search the web in safe search mode. This way you can filter inappropriate search results.

7. Teach your children that what they do not do in real life, they should not do on the Internet. This includes all kinds of cyber bulling via text, photos and videos.

8. Be responsible when your children want to shop online. Do not give them your credit card information. If there is something they need to buy, you should be personally involved.

9. Make sure your children know that they must contact an adult if anything bothersome, annoying, suspicious or scary happens online. Make sure they know who to contact, either you or other adults they trust.

10. Don’t forget! When you are aware of the risks, surfing the Internet is fun. You can enjoy all the good resources the Internet has to offer, together with your children

The majority of teenagers who use social networking websites say their peers are mostly kind to one another online, but 88% still say they’ve witnessed people being mean and cruel on such sites, according to a new study. Fifteen percent say they’ve been the target of bad behavior on social media sites. — LA Times Blog 9/8/11

There is no doubt that today’s kids are dealing with unprecedented pressures in their lives. The above quote from the Los Angeles Times emphasizes that we need to take an active role in protecting our children as they make their way into the world.

But how do you do that? How can you as a parent be there every moment to ensure that your child is safe from the increasing dangers of online activity?

PureSight – Protecting Children Online

PureSight is a wonderful program. It allows access for the parent to be notified remotely when your child becomes vulnerable to a cyber bully attack.

Even when you are away at work or on the road, you can continue to be a responsible parent by remaining actively involved in your children’s online activities and protecting them from online dangers such as cyberbullying before it is too late and the harm has already been done.

PureSight can block Web sites matching seven overall categories: Porn & Dating, Addictions, Social Networks, Forums & Chats, Violence, Sports & Gaming, and Shopping. Parents can expand that to fifteen sub-categories, to block Porn, for example, but allow Dating sites….Any attempt to visit a blocked site gets diverted to a warning page with a wide-eyed owl image. A parent who’s present can enter the master password to temporarily override blocking for this site. Parents may choose to give older children a separate password that allows this override without giving full access to program configuration.
